Name:
Vintage Rolex Explorer reference 6298 circa 1953
Short Description:
Big Bubbleback version of the famed vintage Rolex Explorer.
Long Description:
This vintage Rolex Explorer dates to 1953, the very year Sir Edmund Hilary thrust the Rolex brand and this model into the public psyche, when he climbed to the summit of Mt. Everest.
The watch features a professionally restored dial with a textured background and large arrowhead markers with pointed dauphine hands. The case reference 6298 Explorer, was typically found in the Canadian marketplace and are now referred to as “dress Explorers”. The delightful part about these watches is that they were full-sized models as opposed to the smaller Air-King sized models that are sometimes seen.
The watch is fitted with a Rolex 10 1/2 ligne big bubbleback perpetual calibre A296 movement, which was recently serviced by my Rolex trained watchmaker and is keeping excellent time.
One unusual feature of the watch is the institutional style stamping on the rear of the watch, MR716. I have tried to find out as much as I can about this marking but have been unsuccessful. The case back also features the correct outside stamping identifying the Rolex Oyster Case. I had asked the watchmaker not to remove the light swirl marks on the case back as it may affect the more significant stampings unique to this period and model.
The watch measures 36 mm wide by 45 mm long and is supplied on a brand new padded leather strap.
